Peaks and Valleys

I'm always looking for puns, and I just decided if I ever open a trendy restaurant on a mountain, I will name it Peeks and Valets and it will have a hidden driveway. Get it? Anyway...

I'm in rehearsals right now for an opera. It's a wonderful piece, but incredibly depressing (dead baby, iron curtain, suicide, etc). Rehearsals were tricky to schedule for a while, both in the actual sense of scheduling, and also in the sense of "whose job is it to schedule?" Once those two things were sorted, it's been smoother. I like my cast, and my director reminds me of Corky St. Clair, but only in the good ways--he says funny things, sounds like a New Yorker amid these quiet midwesterners, etc. He's really a good director. Communication is challenging, but not impossible.

I'm really enjoying being around musicians again, though, and singers in particular. It's reminding me how much I loved the mechanics of harmonics, Schenkerian analyses, deciphering dodecaphonic compositions. Many of my cast are in a choir performing Carmina Burana this weekend. I hope they can dig up a comp for me.

I had an interview today and one scheduled for Thursday. Contract is (apparently) in the mail for Summer Dances at Milwaukee.

Friday I had a fun girls night of dinner, dessert, and cards. Saturday I had a wonderful and totally free afternoon with my friend Suzanne which involved a bike ride, the zoo, and a Starbucks gift card. Monday I had a wonderful pre-Cinco de Mayo lunch with a couple ballet friends. Tonight I treated myself to my first movie in 2 months--and for only $5!

I may have a subletter lined up for the summer.

I'm 150 pages from the end of the Twilight series, and I just checked out The Story of Edgar Sawtelle from the library which means My Name Is Red must stay on the back burner a little while longer.

Basically, I'm on the upswing of last week's valley. Feeling better. Just a little homesick, like usual.
